Me and France D'Amour

On April 24, 2012, I played in the house band for the benefit show for l‘Association de parents d’enfants trisomique-21, Lanaudière at the Théâtre Hector-Charland in L’Assomption QC. The first time I played this event was back in October of 2009 and it was probably my favourite gig at the time. So, when I was asked to do it again, they didn’t have to ask me twice!

The house band for this year’s show was made up of some killer musicians: Jason Lang on guitar, ukulele and vocals (and our fearless leader/musical director); Shawn Sasyniuk on drums, Mélanie Guay on piano and vocals; Philippe Godin on bass; and Maud Cicciarello and Anne-Marie Pilon on vocals. Over the course of the evening, we accompanied Roch Voisine (the surprise guest), France D’Amour, Véronique DiCaire, Marc Déry, Christian Marc Gendron, Marie-Pier Perreault, Jean-François Breau, Marie-Ève Janvier, Matt Laurent from Lucky Uke and Vincent Lemay Thivierge.

Some of the highlights for me included trading lead vocals with Jason and some of the kids on “The Ballad of John and Yoko”, listening to France D’Amour’s solo performance of “Smile”, Véronique DiCaire’s impersonations, and playing good music with this great gang of musicians. Watching the 30+ kids who performed on stage, whether it be dance, music or gymnastics, was another big highlight.

Pour moi, c’est toujours un grand plaisir de jouer avec Paul, Nathan, Shawn, Sylvie, Daniel et Éric. Notre partie du spectacle n’était pas long, mais c’était bon! Parmi nos invités étaient Jean-Marc Lalonde et Jason Hutt des Affreux Lurons et Jean-Philippe Goulet du groupe Swing pour une grande version de Zydeco pour Magali (solos, solos, solos!), et tous les artistes de la soirée (Swing, Mastik, Gabrielle Goulet, Brian St-Pierre, parmi d’autres) sont montés pour chanter Notre Place avec nous.

C’était aussi une belle soirée pour mes amis du groupe Règlement 17, qui ont lancé leur premier album lors de leur vitrine!

Le vendredi 20 janvier 2012, c’était le spectacle à la Nouvelle Scène, le dernier de cette tournée et tout un spectacle pour finir cette série!

Parmi les musiciens était Nic Carey aux claviers, Nathan Da Silva à la guitare, Sylvie Chalifoux à la voix, Marc-André Drouin à la basse, Dominic Cloutier à la batterie et Mathieu Gagnon à l’harmonica. C’était la première fois que j’ai joué avec Nic, Marc-André et Dominic et c’était un grand plaisir. Il y avait aussi une très bonne foule à la Nouvelle Scène (incluant beaucoup de visages que j’ai pas vu depuis longtemps).

The ticket from the show

As I’ve said before to others, if it’s on, or was on the Internet at some point, it’s never going away.

In a post from 2010, I talked about how I dug up a newspaper article from the Timmins Daily Press the day before Stone’s Throw, my band at the time, opened  for April Wine at Amigo’s in Timmins, Ontario. Well, while seaching for some other things online, I stumbled upon these from the now inactive Stone’s Throw site (buried in the tombs of Tripod.com).

What I found were two photos taken from that day back in November 2001. One of them is the band with the late Jim Clench (April Wine’s bassist/vocalist at the time), and the other is a shot of the ticket from the show.

The first article that I included in the 2010 post came before our show back in November 2001. What has now magically resurfaced is a copy of the review of that show published on November 24, 2001, written by Robert Thompson of the Timmins Daily Press. Another cool little piece that, along with the others, finds itself a home here after years in the online abyss.

It was very cool for us back in the day to get a couple of write-ups in the paper, since we were in the first year of the band’s existence and had quite a few shows in Northern Ontario under our belts at the time we opened for April Wine. And, remember folks, there was no Facebook, Twitter or blogging back in 2001. People found out about bands through newspapers, among other things.

I don’t go hunting for these, but sometimes it’s amazing that these things pop up while searching for something else. I thought these things were long gone since the work I did on the Stone’s Throw site during my tenure with the band was heavily changed after I left. Somehow, Google just works magic from time to time.

Isn’t nostalgia fun? I can dig it.

Paul et Sylvie à Chapleau

Hé, ça fait un boute depuis que j’ai écrit mon dernier blog sur les spectacles à Ottawa et à Kingston… c’est le temps de faire la suite, n’est-ce pas?

Après ces spectacles dans la région d’Ottawa, nous avons pris direction vers le nord de l’Ontario pour trois spectacles.

Le 29 septembre 2011 – Chapleau

Après une pause-dodo à Sudbury le 28 septembre (et près de 950 km de route d’Ottawa), on a voyagé au Centre culturel Louis-Hémon à Chapleau. Après avoir débarqué de la 17 à Iron Bridge pour monter le 129 (par l’entremise de la 546), le chemin suit la rivière Mississagi pour un bon bout; vraiment une route de plaisance en automne (mais, sans contre-rail – on fait attention!)

Le Centre culturel Louis-Hémon est une belle salle attachée à l’École secondaire catholique Trillium où à peu près 30 personnes ont assisté au spectacle (incluant une élève qui a participé dans mon atelier aux Jeux Franco-Ontariens de 2011). C’était aussi le premier spectacle où Paul a interprété sa chanson “cartoon” On est tous pareil. Le spectacle était un bon début pour la série.

Aussi, il n’y a pas de réception cellulaire à Chapleau (ce que plusieurs entre nous ont découvert!)

Sur la scène à Kapuskasing

Le 30 septembre – Kapuskasing

Le matin, on part de Chapleau pour prendre le 101 jusqu’à Timmins (ah, réception cellulaire!) ensuite le 11 via chemin 655 (oups, réception perdu).

Le retour à Kap! La dernière fois que j’étais dans ce coin de la province était en 2009 lors de la fête de la St-Jean (avec les mêmes musiciens, en plus). La St-Jean à Kapuskasing marquait aussi la première fois que j’ai accompagné Paul en spectacle. Le Centre régionale des loisirs culturels était la plus grande salle de la tournée et la foule était aussi peut-être la plus grande. Le spectacle, comme la soirée précédente à Chapleau, s’est très bien déroulé et la foule avait de l’énergie. La soirée s’est fini avec une réception au Centre pour la fête du drapeau Franco-ontarien.

Le 1er octobre – Timmins

La scène à Timmins

De retour à Timmins (ma première visite depuis 2001). Nous avons revenu sur nos pas de Kapuskasing le matin du 1er pour se rendre au Centre culturel La Ronde. On avait, encore une fois, une bonne foule pour le dernier spectacle de la tournée du nord. C’était aussi la première fois que nous avons eu une première partie au spectacle; Joël Ducharme et Marcel Marcotte ont interprété quelques chansons pour réchauffer la foule. Le spectacle s’est très bien passé (sauf un petit moment où j’ai presque trébuché dans les batteries à Shawn), marquant une bonne fin à cette série de spectacles.

Joël Ducharme est aussi photographe par excellence qui a prit des photos de notre spectacle et a composé un bel article de la soirée sur son site web.

Et voilà! Mon petit aperçu de cette série de spectacles avec des très bons musiciens (Shawn Sasyniuk, Daniel Boivin, Éric Sauvé, Nathan Da Silva, Sylvie Chalifoux et Paul Demers), notre technicien fidèle (François Labelle), 2 300 km de route et un bon séjour dans le nord. Let’s do it again sometime…

Le 20 septembre 2011 était la date du lancement du troisième album de Paul Demers, Encore une fois. Le lancement s’est fait en style de “5 à 7″ sous une tente dans le stationnement de la Nouvelle Scène à Ottawa. On a joué presque toutes les chansons de l’album pendant notre mini-set et l’énergie sur la scène était forte! C’était le premier spectacle avec le groupe au complet (Éric Sauvé, Nathan Da Silva, Daniel Boivin, Sylvie Chalifoux, Shawn Sasyniuk, Paul Demers et moi-même) et on a eu le plaisir d’avoir Michel Bénac, Tricia Foster et René Fortier sur la scène avec nous.

Jean-Michel Ouimet (qui a réalisé une bonne partie de l’album) était là avec sa caméra vidéo. Voici un vidéo de la chanson J’ai ben le goût de recommencer.

La scène à Kingston

On a joué le prochain spectacle à Kingston au Centre Culturel Frontenac le samedi 24 septembre 2011. Le spectacle s’est déroulé à l’extérieur du centre; même avec la pluie (il n’y avait pas beaucoup) entre 30 et 40 personnes étaient au centre pour le spectacle. Pour ce spectacle, Olivier Fairfield a joué la batterie (Shawn était à Herst avec En Bref…)

Une drôle d’histoire de ce spectacle. Pendant qu’on jouait Un jour j’irai dans l’nord pour notre soundcheck, on a fait sauter le disjoncteur! Tout nos équipements, sauf un jeu de lumières, ne fonctionnaient plus. Après un peu de temps, l’électricité est revenu! Pendant le spectacle, on joue Un jour j’irai dans l’nord, et (presque au même moment dans la chanson pendant notre soundcheck), on a fait sauter le disjoncteur encore! Oops…

D’autres histoires à venir!

Le premier spectacle était le lancement de la nouvelle programmation de CJFO FM (la radio communautaire francophone de la région d’Ottawa) le dimanche 18 septembre 2011 sur la croisière Rivière Outaouais. Un très belle journée pour être en bateau! Le spectacle s’est bien déroulé (comme toujours avec ces musiciens) et Michel Bénac du group Swing a monté pour chanter un peu avec nous.

On Friday, March 25, 2011, I had the pleasure of playing with Ottawa’s own Tragically Hip Tribute, Little Bones (filling for guitarist James Few) at D’Arcy McGee’s in Bells Corners. This is a band that I’ve seen several times before and have filled in with them in the past (’round 2005, I think); if anyone can do The Hip right, it’s these guys! (It also meant that I had to bring my A-Game, learning around 30 Tragically Hip tunes as close as possible to the records.)

The show went really well and the crowd was really cool as well. That was one thing I do remember from seeing Little Bones so often; the audience really gets into it and know the words to every single song we did. It was a great time playing with these guys!

The following night (Saturday, March 26, 2011, for those keeping score), Nathan Da Silva and I once again rocked The Mix Steakhouse and Bar with The Nimoy Brothers. That show marked our 5th appearance at The Mix in as many months and we always have a good time playing the place. We’ll be back there again on Saturday, May 28, 2011, which breaks the monthly streak, but will still be a good ol’ time nonetheless!
